Abstract |

Comparing the
histologic findings in a cervical biopsy with an antecedent Pap
smear whose cytological findings led to the biopsy procedure is
an important component of quality diagnostic pathology. When Pap
smear and biopsy results correlate which they do most of the
time they reassure pathologist, clinician, and patient that good
screening testing has led to appropriate medical follow-up. When
there is lack of correlation between histology and cytology, the
aim of this study is to identify the discrepant between PAP
smear and corresponding colposcopicic biopsy. An attempt to
explain the discrepancy by the laboratory and pathologist
assists in the proper follow-up and care for the patient. While
a minor discrepancy in the histo-cyto correlation may not
particularly press the need to review the cytology and histology
concurrently in all cases, those cases where non-correlation
occurs absolutely require Histology-Cytology Correlation in
order to plan patient care. This study was undertaken to find
out the discrepancies of an abnormal Pap smear. Data was
collected from different hospital of a developing country, and
to carry out a clinic pathological and demographical analysis
for establishing abnormality in a Pap smear, compared to
colposcopy biopsy final diagnosis.
